Interphraser Overview
The Interphraser is a new language solution designed to allow communication immediately and effectively with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) and deaf patients at a fraction of the cost of human interpreters, telephonic interpreters, and video interpretation networks. When rapid communication of a standard set of questions or commands is required the Interphraser can be quick, error-free, and cost effective. Interphraser's additional features make it a versatile language communication system that is particularly useful in certain areas such as healthcare and that can improve the quality of care with tamper-resistant and tamper-evident records to help meet regulatory requirements while providing measurable outcomes.

The Interphraser works by allowing the operator to select a phrase to show and play audibly to a respondent. The example above includes some mental health questions that a custody assistant might ask an inmate when they are being admitted into the jail. In this example a Korean-speaking inmate will both see and hear the phrase shown in the diagram on the right. They can then answer by selecting one of the answers at the bottom. The answer selected is then transmitted back to the custody assistant's screen where it is displayed as an ongoing history.
The software can be installed on many devices including a handheld unit slightly larger than a cell phone, a netbook, a tablet or pad-type computer, a laptop computer, or even a desktop computer hardwired to a server. Two (or more) devices complete a flexible wired or wireless (Bluetooth or 802.11) communication loop thus eliminating reliance upon a telephone line, internet access, or a hospital or clinic network.
The Interphraser system is also not limited to a certain languages or to a particular phrase-set; using the same approach one could create literally thousands of different phrase-set used with thousands of different languages. The possible combinations are enormous, and the possible benefits to society are limited only by the imagination.
